We see a large number of individuals with headaches in our Nashville office, and Sweeney Chiropractic has been able to support many of them. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that half of all adults have difficulty with some type of headache condition, so this certainly isn’t unexpected. One of the most prevalent kinds of headaches which our patients suffer from is cervicogenic headache which, fortunately, chiropractic can commonly help.
A cervicogenic headache is one that originates from issues in the cervical spine. It could be because of a condition with either the spine itself (primarily, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it may be triggered by a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This dysfunction in your spine produces compaction or irritation of the spinal nerves, which can contribute to headache pain.
How can you know if the headache you are experiencing is a cervicogenic headache? Apart from getting a diagnosis from a healthcare expert, a frequent symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or pain in your neck. This is sometimes followed by pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.
Considering cervicogenic headaches will not go away until whatever problem is generating them is remedied, it is important to receive treatment instead of just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective approach, and one that offers a considerable amount of relief.
In one study circulated in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, researchers looked at 80 people who had recurrent cervicogenic headaches. One-half received chiropractic care and the other half underwent light massage therapy. Each participant was examined 12 and 24 weeks after the procedures and it was found that chiropractic offered the best effects.
In particular, this study uncovered that chiropractic adjustments gave patients better pain relief and lessened the number of headaches that occurred. In addition to that, it also lessened the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
